Hello & Welcome and we hope all are well.
Aleister Crowley, who was he? was he the beast? was he wicked?
In this article and the ones to come we will be looking into this very interesting character, looking into who he was, what he did and what he left behind. So lets get into it and look at who Aleister Crowley was.
Aleister Crowley born Edward Alexander Crowley on the 12th of October 1875 in Royal Leamington Spa was born into a wealthy family with a long stanidng brewing tradition (we will look at the family brewing history separatley). Crowley`s parents were of faith as part of the Plymouth Brethren, the Plymouth Brethen are classed as a free church where they see the Bible as the only authority for church doctrine and practice. Crowley rejected this faith to look into the Western Mystery Traditions.
Western Mystery Traditions also known as Western Esotericism can be defined in many different ways. From one of its deffinitions it can mean the grouping of movements that embraces an enchanted worldview or the grouping of views that have been rejected by Western science or religious authorities. Elements of these movements can see the merging of faiths with intellectuals combining pagan philosophies with Christianity or Kabbalah.
So far we can see that Aleister Crowley was born into a wealthy family with a Christian foundation and then chose to study and contemplate a wider spectrum of faiths.
Before we look at his occult works lets look at a bit more of the man.
Crowley was educated at Trinity College at the University of Cambridge where he concentrated on poetry & mountaineering, Crowley made some great strides in mountaineering as he was noted to be one of the first westerners to attempt K2 and for leading an attempt on Kanchenjunga and while attempting Kanchenjunga it is said they reached the highest point of any human at that time. Crowley was a very active climber in the Lake District also completing a solo ascent of Napes Needle.
If we are to round up a brief description of Crowley so far we are looking at an educated man that must have been physically fit with a very curious mind. Before we look at Crowley and his occult ties and as we wrap up this brief introducation we should also look at some of the reports of Crowley in his younger age. Crowley before attending the University of Cambridge was sent to boarding school at the age of 8 by the age of 11 he lost his dad to cancer and it was said by Crowley this was his turning point, he became very disconnected with the Christian teachings and has he grew older would often point out inconsistancies, he also started to rebel against the Christian upbringing he had by smoking and also spending time with prostitutes.
We hope you have enjoyed this brief look into Crowley`s early life and in the coming articles we will look into his move into the occult and the people he was around while also looking at the claims of his behaviour.
Thanks.
